Sunderland have completed the signing of Italian playmaker Emanuele Giacccherini from Serie A champions Juventus in a deal worth 8-9million pounds. The 28 year old signs a 4 year contract at the Stadium of Light which will see him at the club until 2017. Di-Canio continues to exploit his Italian contacts as this signing could prove to be one of the best players to enter the Stadium of Light.
The Italian international was spotted at the club’s training ground earlier today in which he passed his medical several hours ago, leading to the completion of the deal. Giaccherini was part of the Italian confederations cup squad that bowed out to Spain on penalties earlier this month as he smashed the post in extra time denying his home country a place in the final against Brazil. The Italian becomes the black-cats’ 9th summer signing as he joins Modibo Diakite, Valentin Roberge, Vito Manonne, El Hadji Ba, David Moberg Karrlson, Jozy Altidore, Duncan Watmore and Cabral all through the entrance door.
Giaccherini began his professional career with Italian outfit Cesena in which he made 97 appearances netting 20 times over a 7 year spell at the club (in exception to 3 loan moves from 2004-2008). After impressing on many occasions, Giaccherini saw him self complete a move to Turin in which he signed for Serie A giants Juventus in 2011 for a fee of roughly 4 million euros. The playmaker made a total of 40 league appearances over his 2 year stay as he netted 4 times, capturing the attention of Sunderland boss Paolo Di-Canio. The 2 time Serie A winner will be looking to impress early on as he will definitely be taking a spot in Sunderland’s new and improved starting 11. A player who contains extreme ability, the versatile midfielder should cope with the pace of the Premier League as he posesses world class experience from the likes of Juventus and the Italian national team. With a total of 235 club appearances, Giaccherini will definitely be a player for the neutral spectator to look out for as he will offer flair, vision, wisdom and even an eye for goal. A fantastic signing by Di-Canio as Giaccherini should live up the the fans’ expectations as he is a player of the highest quality.
